I'm a Toronto artist and filmmaker with a passion for pushing boundaries, creating indelible images, and empowering women and youth.
I make art as a way to immerse audiences in stories that are fresh, compelling, and surprisingly relatable. I collaborated with writer and former escort Andrea Werhun to co-create and photograph the acclaimed illustrated book Modern Whore: A Memoir (Virgin Twins / Impulse [b] Publishing). The New York Times calls my images “provocative” and Hazlitt attributes them “the high contrast irony of a David LaChapelle magazine spread.” Celebrated cartoonist Chester Brown has called Modern Whore ‘‘Everything you could want a book to be — it’s moving, entertaining, funny, and smart’’ and feminist porn pioneer and author Annie Sprinkle says the memoir ‘‘Raises the bar and creates its own new genre.’’
My love for creating work with the aim of sparking conversation and insight about relevant social issues extends to my film projects. I had the opportunity to co-create and direct the documentary hybrid program This Art Works! (CBC Arts) which featured the creative processes of over twenty contemporary artists in a quirky retro format alongside comedy sketches. I co-created and directed another digital series, Climate Talks, (Ryerson Image Centre) which engaged Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, renowned industrial landscape photographer Edward Burtynsky, and other adults interrogated by kids about climate change.
I believe that film can be an empowering medium for young people to speak for themselves and share valuable perspectives. I've worked with children and youth on a variety of projects, including co-directing the short documentary Sleeping with Family (Official Selection, Hot Docs Film Festival) about the living arrangements in a low-income neighbourhood as told by fifteen teenagers.
Shortly after earning my Film Studies BFA from Ryerson University, I co-founded Madeleine Co., an all-female interdisciplinary art collective reimagining social issues through experiential storytelling and multimedia art. Our large scale film installation Listen to the Chorus (Nuit Blanche Toronto) represented our impassioned response to the current state of the women’s rights movement.
I was a winner of the WIFT BravoFACT live pitch competition, the HSBC Filmmaker's Award, the Universal Studios Scholarship, and the Ouat! Media Distribution Award. For my projects with Madeleine Co., I’ve received the ArtReach Grant in support of youth arts initiatives, the Ashoka Photowings Insights Grant, and the Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
